DUA FOR PROTECTION FROM DISEASES
Last Reviewed: March 2026
This is a Prophetic Dua narrated by Anas ibn Malik (ra), in which the Prophet (saw) sought refuge with Allah against severe physical and mental afflictions.
This Dua naturally forms part of the tradition of Morning and Evening Azkar.
Dua
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْبَرَصِ، وَالْجُنُونِ، وَالْجُذَامِ، وَمِنْ سَيِّئِ الْأَسْقَامِ
Allahumma inni a'uzu bika minal-barasi, wal-jununi, wal-juzami, wa min sayyi'il-asqam
O Allah! Verily I seek refuge in You from leucoderma, insanity, leprosy, and evil/severe diseases.
[Abu Dawud 1554, Sahih]
"...And when I am ill, it is He who cures me."
[Surah Ash-Shu'ara, 26:80]
Hadith
Jabir reported Messenger of Allah (saw) as saying:
There is a remedy for every malady, and when the remedy is applied to the disease it is cured with the permission of Allah, the Exalted and Glorious.
[Sahih Muslim 2204]
Key Points
- 'Sayyi'il-asqam' refers to diseases that are severe, debilitating, or life-threatening in nature. Scholars regard it as a comprehensive dua that encompasses all harmful illnesses, and is not restricted to any specific ailment.
- Islam does not separate dua from action. The Prophet (saw) taught that every disease has a cure, and that this cure is attained with Allah's permission. Reciting this dua is an act of tawakkul, placing one's trust in Allah while taking necessary measures, including medical care. Neither of these serves as a substitute for the other.
Make this dua part of your morning and evening azkar.
